VIPR's Commitment to Mental Health and Peer Support

At VIPR, we understand that mental health is just as important as physical health. With everyone so busy, particularly in the insurance and technology space, where stress and pressure can often build, we are committed to fostering a workplace where mental health is treated with the same level of care, attention, and respect as physical well-being. One of the key pillars of this commitment is creating a culture of open and honest communication about mental health and well-being.

We believe that mental health conversations should be normalised. Unfortunately, for many, talking about mental health can feel intimidating or uncomfortable due to lingering societal stigma. This is something we’re determined to change. By prioritising these conversations, we aim to create a supportive, understanding, and non-judgmental environment where employees can speak openly about their struggles, whether big or small.

Our approach is grounded in the belief that it’s okay to say, “I’m not okay.” Everyone has their ups and downs, and asking for help should never feel like a burden or something to be ashamed of. Normalising these conversations is essential for breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health, and it starts with how we as a Company respond to those who need support.

The role of Mental Health First Aiders

A vital part of creating a safe and supportive environment at VIPR is the role of Mental Health First Aiders.

These trained individuals are equipped with the skills to offer confidential and approachable support to colleagues who may be struggling. They serve as the first line of support, offering a compassionate ear and signposting to available support, in a confidential and non-judgmental manner.

Mental Health First Aiders don’t have all the answers, but they are there to listen and help signpost individuals to the appropriate resources, whether that be internal or external. Their role is crucial in creating an accessible and welcoming environment where mental health is treated with the same priority as physical health. By having trained professionals in place, we ensure that employees know there is always someone they can turn to when they need support, making it easier for them to open up and take the first step toward getting the help they need.

Access to support and benefits

While peer support is an essential part of our culture, we also recognise the importance of professional help. That’s why employees have the option to enrol in certain benefits that include access to an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) — a confidential service offering counselling, advice, and support for personal or work-related challenges. This service is available 24/7 to those enrolled, whether it’s for a quick chat or ongoing support.

In addition, we offer access to a range of professional wellbeing resources to help our people manage their mental health effectively. By providing these options, we demonstrate our commitment to supporting not only wellbeing at work, but also helping our employees thrive in all areas of their lives.

Reinforcing Company Values and Culture

Breaking the stigma surrounding mental health ties directly into the values that shape our Company culture. Jo Hayes, Head of People said,  “We foster an environment that encourages open dialogue, empathy, and respect. By encouraging employees to speak up about their mental health struggles, we are reinforcing the idea that it’s okay to not be okay, seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.”

Our culture is built on trust and collaboration, and we understand that these values need to extend to how we support each other’s mental and emotional well-being.

Mental health struggles don’t discriminate, and when we create a culture where these issues are spoken about openly, we build stronger teams, better communication, and a more empathetic workplace.

The importance of mental health can’t be overstated. As we continue to focus on growing and evolving as a business, it’s essential that we also evolve the way we view and approach mental health. Support is always available at VIPR, whether you’re in need of a chat with a colleague, a Mental Health First Aider, or professional resources like an Employee Assistance Programme.

At VIPR, we’re committed to ensuring that everyone has access to the support they need to thrive, both personally and professionally. We believe that mental health matters, and we are here to listen, support, and take action.
